This recipe puts a twist on a classic recipe by serving on fresh sourdough and topping with cheese and pickles. It's a healthier version of sloppy joes that the whole family will love!
Heat a large skillet or dutch oven over medium heat. Once it’s warm, add a little bit of butter or oil. Add the chopped onions and ground beef to the pan and saute for about 5 minutes.
Add the bell pepper and continue to cook until the beef is cooked through and is no longer pink.
Season with salt and pepper, and add the minced garlic. Cook for a few more minutes until the garlic is fragrant.
Add the rest of the sauce ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until you like the consistency.
While the sloppy joes simmer, prepare you sourdough toast and toppings. Slice the cheese, and place them on the sourdough bread. Use a toaster oven or regular oven to toast your bread. In the oven, put all slices of bread on a baking sheet and broil until the cheese is melted. Be careful not to burn your toast, broil is powerful!
Once the sloppy joe sauce is done, taste and add more salt and pepper if desired.
Serve warm on cheesy sourdough toast, and top with pickles.
Notes
For spicy sloppy joes, add diced jalapeño in with the bell peppers for an extra kick. Or top your sloppy joe with a dash of hot sauce or red pepper flakes.
