Why Raw Milk?
If you are new to the raw milk conversation, you might be wondering why raw milk? Well, there are loads of reasons that you should be drinking raw milk, and not just in your hot chocolate. Raw milk is milk that has not been heat treated or pasteurized, and comes straight from the animal to your glass. It’s one of the most nutrient dense foods that you can add into your diet.
I’ve got an entire post on raw milk if you are interested in learning more about the health benefits, but for now here are a few of the reasons to consider adding raw milk into your diet:
- Raw milk is incredibly nutrient dense, because it maintains all of the nutrients that are typically destroyed in the pasteurization, or the process of heating milk.
- Raw milk can be healing. Historically, raw milk has been used across the world to treat a variety of different ailments.
- Raw milk boosts your immune system. Raw milk contains immunoglobulins, specifically IgG, that support immune systems function.
- It’s good for your skin. Raw milk is rich in vitamins A, D, and K2, as well as enzymes and healthy fats, which can contribute to healthy clear skin.
Ingredients in Raw Milk Hot Chocolate
This healthy hot chocolate recipe tastes just like the hot chocolate you remember growing up (better honestly), but without all of the extra ingredients. Just to give you an idea, here is the ingredient list from a popular brand of hot cocoa mix:
SUGAR, CORN SYRUP SOLIDS, DAIRY PRODUCT SOLIDS, HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OIL (COCONUT AND/OR PALM KERNEL AND/OR SOYBEAN), COCOA PROCESSED WITH ALKALI, AND LESS THAN 2% OF SALT, CELLULOSE GUM, SODIUM CASEINATE, DIPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM ALUMINOSILICATE, MONO- AND DIGLYCERIDES, GUAR GUM, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, SUCRALOSE.
There are several problem ingredients in this packaged hot chocolate mix. Vegetable oil, corn syrup, and artificial flavors… yikes! This homemade hot chocolate recipe however, has real food ingredients that you can pronounce, and tastes even better than any mix you can buy at grocery stores! Here’s what you will need:
2 Cups Raw Milk
If you aren’t sure where to find raw milk, try looking up your location on this raw milk finder. There may be a local farmer near you that you can source your milk from. If raw milk isn’t available to you, the next best milk would be grass-fed whole milk. If you can’t have cow’s milk due to an allergy, you could substitute coconut milk instead. I would personally avoid nut milks like almond milk because they are heavily processed.
2 Heaping TB Raw Cacao Powder
You can certainly adjust these measurements based on how chocolatey you like your hot chocolate. Not all cacao powder is created equal, so look for organic cacao for the most nutrient dense option.
2 Scoops (Or 20 Grams Protein) Chocolate Collagen
I love adding collagen to my drinks for an extra boost of gut-healthy protein. Two scoops of collagen (depending on the brand and serving size) adds 20 grams of protein to this hot chocolate recipe, and doesn’t change the flavor. My favorite brands for this recipe are Thrive Market, or Ancient Nutrition.
1 TB Real Maple Syrup
We don’t need refined sugar to add a touch of sweetness. Real maple syrup is my favorite choice, but you could also use organic coconut sugar or organic cane sugar.
1 Pastured Egg Yolk (optional)
If raw egg yolks are not your thing, you can certainly leave out this ingredient. But a raw pastured egg yolk adds a creamy, nutrient dense powerhouse ingredient to your healthy hot chocolate. Pastured egg yolks are high in vitamins A, D, E, and K, as well as folate, vitamin B12, choline, minerals, and more.
1-2 TB Raw Cream (Or Half & Half)
Cream takes this hot chocolate to an entirely new level of creamy. You can skim some raw cream off of the top of your raw milk (it rises to the top!), or you can sometimes purchase cream separately from dairy farmers.
How To Make Raw Milk Hot Chocolate
1. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, combine fresh raw milk, cocoa powder, and chocolate collagen powder. Whisk to combine, and stir occasionally as it heats up.
2. While the milk is heating, in a large mug combine egg yolk, raw cream, and maple syrup. Using a whisk or a hand frother, combine the ingredients until they are nice and creamy.
3. Once the hot chocolate has reached your desired temperature, pour the hot milk directly into your prepared mug.
4. Stir all the ingredients until everything is combined.
5. Enjoy hot, with your favorite toppings!

Raw Milk Hot Chocolate Variations
Have some fun with your hot chocolate, and try some variations the next time you enjoy it. You could try:
- A touch of vanilla extract
- A pinch of cinnamon
- A pinch of salt
- Raw honey instead of maple syrup
Another fun variation would be to drink this combination cold. For raw chocolate milk, simply combine all ingredients (and cold milk).
How To Serve Raw Milk Hot Chocolate
Raw milk hot chocolate is delicious just as is, or try adding your favorite toppings. Some of my favorites are homemade marshmallows, whipped cream, or dark chocolate shavings.
